What Is Skilled Immigration?

Skilled immigration is a points-based pathway to permanent residency and citizenship in developed countries that face skill shortages in key industries. Unlike investment-based programmes, skilled immigration is open to qualified professionals, tradespeople, and technical workers who can demonstrate that their skills, education, and work experience match the needs of the destination country’s economy.

Australia and Canada are the world’s two most established and accessible skilled immigration destinations. Both countries operate transparent, objective, merit-based systems — meaning your age, English proficiency, qualifications, and years of experience determine your eligibility. No minimum investment is required. For the right candidate, skilled immigration is the fastest and most affordable route to a new life in a developed, English-speaking country.

TEG Consultancy’s skilled immigration advisors assess your complete profile — occupation, points score, English level, education credentials, and family circumstances — to identify the most viable pathway for you and build a step-by-step action plan to maximise your chances of success.

💡 Key insight for 2026: Both Australia and Canada have updated their skilled immigration systems. Australia now issues Subclass 189 invitations in quarterly rounds, while Canada’s Express Entry has moved to category-based selection with 10 active categories. TEG Consultancy tracks every change and adjusts client strategies in real time.

Frequently Asked Questions — Skilled Immigration

What is skilled immigration and who is eligible?
Skilled immigration is a points-based pathway to permanent residency for qualified professionals, tradespeople, and technical workers who can fill skill shortages in destination countries. Eligibility is based on your occupation (must be on the country’s skilled occupation list), age, English language proficiency, educational qualifications, and years of work experience. You do not need a job offer to apply through Australia’s GSM or Canada’s Express Entry Federal Skilled Worker Programme.
It depends entirely on your personal profile. Australia is better for older applicants (up to 44) with high points scores, those in healthcare or engineering, and those willing to consider regional living for faster pathways. Canada is generally more accessible for a wider range of occupations, particularly through category-based draws for French speakers, healthcare workers, trades, and education professionals — often with lower effective CRS cut-offs. TEG Consultancy conducts a free dual-country assessment to identify which destination gives you the stronger probability of success.
For Australia: the Subclass 189 and 491 visas typically take 6–12 months from invitation to grant; the Subclass 190 takes 6–9 months. However, obtaining a positive skills assessment first typically adds 4–12 weeks. For Canada: the official Express Entry standard is 6 months from application to PR grant — but this excludes the time needed to build your CRS score, obtain an ECA, and receive an ITA. The total process from starting preparation to PR approval is typically 12–24 months for most applicants.
For Australia’s Subclass 189 and 491 visas: no job offer is required. For Canada’s Express Entry Federal Skilled Worker Programme and Canadian Experience Class: no job offer is required. However, in Australia, certain occupations may require a Caveated position (e.g. Management Consultant requiring employer evidence). As of March 2025, Canada removed job offer points from the CRS calculation entirely, so having a job offer no longer provides a scoring advantage in the Express Entry pool.
Yes. Both Australia and Canada allow you to include your spouse or common-law partner and dependent children in your skilled immigration application. Your partner’s skills and English proficiency can even add points to your Australian SkillSelect score (up to 10 additional points). In Canada, your spouse’s education, language ability, and work experience also contribute additional CRS points to your profile.
For Australia, you need at least “Competent English” (IELTS 6.0 in each band or equivalent) to be eligible, with higher scores earning more points (Proficient = IELTS 7.0; Superior = IELTS 8.0). For Canada Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker), you need a minimum CLB 7 in all four language abilities (IELTS 6.0 in reading/writing and 6.5 in speaking/listening as a guideline). Higher scores significantly increase your CRS score in Canad
