Portugal offers four distinct pathways to European residency for non-EU nationals — the Golden Visa, D7 Passive Income Visa, D2 Entrepreneur Visa, and D8 Digital Nomad Visa. TEG Consultancy guides you through every step, from eligibility assessment to receiving your residence card.
The Portugal D7 Visa — officially the Visa for Financially Independent Persons — is a long-stay residency visa that allows non-EU nationals to live in Portugal by demonstrating a stable, regular income from sources outside the country. It does not require any investment, job offer, or business activity in Portugal.
Also widely referred to as the Portugal Passive Income Visa, Retirement Visa, or Non-Lucrative Visa, the D7 is the simplest and most cost-effective route to Portuguese residency for those with reliable income from abroad — whether that is a pension, rental income, dividends, interest, or any other regular passive income stream.
✓ No investment required. Unlike the Portugal Golden Visa, the D7 does not require any capital investment in Portugal. You simply need to prove you have enough income to support yourself — and your family if applicable — without working in Portugal.
The D7 Visa is designed for financially self-sufficient non-EU nationals. It is particularly popular with the following profiles:
The minimum passive income required for the Portugal D7 Visa in 2026 is based on the Portuguese national minimum wage. Here are the current thresholds:
| Applicant Type | Monthly Requirement | Annual Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Main Applicant (alone) | €920/month | €11,040/year |
| + Spouse or Adult Dependent | + €460/month (50%) | + €5,520/year |
| + Each Child Under 18 | + €276/month (30%) | + €3,312/year |

💡 Tip: Your income does not have to come from a single source. AIMA will accept a combination of income types (e.g., part pension + part rental income), as long as the total meets the monthly minimum threshold and can be proven with bank statements and supporting documentation.

⚠ October 2025 Change — Family Reunification: From October 2025, Portugal’s new law (“Lei n.º 61/2025”) requires D7 Visa holders to complete 2 years of residency before bringing eligible family members to Portugal under the family reunification process. Previously, family could apply alongside the main applicant from the start. Contact TEG Consultancy if you are planning to bring family members — we will advise on the best approach given the latest rules.
⚠ April 2026 — Citizenship Law Amendments: The Portuguese Parliament approved amendments in April 2026 that could extend the citizenship timeline from 5 to 10 years (7 years for EU/CPLP nationals). These changes are not yet law — they are pending Presidential review. TEG Consultancy will notify all active clients as soon as the legal position is confirmed.
The minimum passive income for the Portugal D7 Visa in 2026 is €920 per month (approximately €11,040 per year) for a single applicant. Add 50% (€460/month) for a spouse, and 30% (€276/month) for each child under 18. Income can come from pensions, rental income, dividends, interest, royalties, or regular overseas transfers.
