Home » Portugal D7 Visa Complete Guide
Move to Portugal with just €920/month in passive income. The D7 Visa — also known as the Retirement Visa or Passive Income Visa — is the most affordable and accessible route to Portuguese residency for non-EU nationals.
The D7 Visa is designed for financially self-sufficient non-EU nationals. It is particularly popular with the following profiles:
Individuals receiving a regular pension from their home country who want to enjoy Portugal’s climate, healthcare, and quality of life in retirement.
Property owners earning consistent rental income from properties located outside Portugal.
Individuals living on investment portfolios, dividend income, annuities, interest, or regular income from financial assets.
Those earning stable passive or investment-based income who prefer a lower income threshold than the D8 Digital Nomad Visa.
Authors, artists, or creators receiving regular royalties or intellectual property income from work created outside Portugal.
FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) individuals with sufficient savings or investment income who want to base themselves in Europe.
The Portugal D7 Visa — officially the Visa for Financially Independent Persons — is a long-stay residency visa that allows non-EU nationals to live in Portugal by demonstrating a stable, regular income from sources outside the country. It does not require any investment, job offer, or business activity in Portugal.
Also widely referred to as the Portugal Passive Income Visa, Retirement Visa, or Non-Lucrative Visa, the D7 is the simplest and most cost-effective route to Portuguese residency for those with reliable income from abroad — whether that is a pension, rental income, dividends, interest, or any other regular passive income stream.
✓ No investment required. Unlike the Portugal Golden Visa, the D7 does not require any capital investment in Portugal. You simply need to prove you have enough income to support yourself — and your family if applicable — without working in Portugal.
The minimum passive income required for the Portugal D7 Visa in 2026 is based on the Portuguese national minimum wage. Here are the current thresholds:
Applicant Type | Monthly Requirement | Annual Equivalent |
Main Applicant (alone) | €920/month | €11,040/year |
+ Spouse or Adult Dependent | + €460/month (50%) | + €5,520/year |
+ Each Child Under 18 | + €276/month (30%) | + €3,312/year |
💡 Tip: Your income does not have to come from a single source. AIMA will accept a combination of income types (e.g., part pension + part rental income), as long as the total meets the monthly minimum threshold and can be proven with bank statements and supporting documentation.

We obtain your Portuguese tax number (NIF) remotely and assist you in opening a bank account at a major Portuguese bank — both required before the visa application.
You must have a signed 12-month rental agreement or property deed in Portugal. TEG Consultancy can connect you with trusted local real estate agents to find suitable accommodation remotely
We compile, certify, apostille, and translate all required documents. This is the most critical stage — incomplete or incorrect documents are the leading cause of D7 Visa rejections and delays.
Submit the D7 Visa application at the Portuguese Consulate in your home country or via VFS Global. TEG Consultancy prepares you fully for this appointment. The visa fee is €110 plus a VFS service charge of approximately €40.
If approved, you receive a 4-month D Visa that allows you to enter Portugal and apply for your residence permit from within the country.
After entering Portugal, TEG Consultancy schedules your AIMA appointment for biometric data collection. Once approved, your first 2-year residence permit card is issued. This can take 6–9 months from the initial AIMA submission.
Your permit is renewed for a further 3 years after the initial 2-year period. After 5 years, you can apply for permanent residency or Portuguese citizenship.
⚠ October 2025 Change — Family Reunification: From October 2025, Portugal’s new law (“Lei n.º 61/2025”) requires D7 Visa holders to complete 2 years of residency before bringing eligible family members to Portugal under the family reunification process. Previously, family could apply alongside the main applicant from the start. Contact TEG Consultancy if you are planning to bring family members — we will advise on the best approach given the latest rules.
⚠ April 2026 — Citizenship Law Amendments: The Portuguese Parliament approved amendments in April 2026 that could extend the citizenship timeline from 5 to 10 years (7 years for EU/CPLP nationals). These changes are not yet law — they are pending Presidential review. TEG Consultancy will notify all active clients as soon as the legal position is confirmed.
The minimum passive income for the Portugal D7 Visa in 2026 is €920 per month (approximately €11,040 per year) for a single applicant. Add 50% (€460/month) for a spouse, and 30% (€276/month) for each child under 18. Income can come from pensions, rental income, dividends, interest, royalties, or regular overseas transfers.
The D7 Visa is designed for financially independent individuals who do not need to work in Portugal. However, there is no explicit prohibition on working in Portugal once you hold a D7 residence permit. If you intend to take up employment or run a business in Portugal, the D2 Entrepreneur Visa or a work permit may be more appropriate. TEG Consultancy can advise on the best visa for your specific situation.
No. You do not need to purchase property in Portugal for the D7 Visa. You can provide a signed 12-month rental agreement as proof of accommodation. TEG Consultancy can help you find suitable rental accommodation in Portugal if needed.
The total process typically takes 6 to 9 months from initial document preparation to receiving your AIMA residence permit card. The consulate visa stage may take 2–4 months. The AIMA appointment and card issuance stage typically takes a further 4–6 months depending on current backlogs.
Yes, but under the October 2025 rule change, D7 Visa holders must now complete 2 years of residency in Portugal before bringing family members under the family reunification process. Your required monthly income must include 50% of the minimum for each adult dependent and 30% for each child. TEG Consultancy advises families on the optimal timing and structure for their applications.
Yes. Once you hold a valid Portuguese D7 residence permit, you can travel visa-free across all 26 Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, in addition to your right to live in Portugal.
Portugal’s Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax regime previously offered significant benefits to D7 applicants, including 0% tax on foreign pensions for 10 years. However, the classic NHR regime ended for new applicants from 2024. A new incentive scheme (IFICI — Incentivo Fiscal à Investigação Científica e Inovação) was introduced but has a more limited scope. TEG Consultancy works with Portuguese tax advisors and can provide introductions to qualified tax professionals who specialise in expatriate taxation.
TEG Consultancy guides retirees, passive income earners, and financially independent individuals through every step of the D7 Visa process — from eligibility check to residence card issuance.
