Living in Monaco
Located on the Mediterranean Sea, with France as its only neighbour, the Principality of Monaco is the second smallest country in the world. Monaco offers a high standard of living, temperate weather, high personal security, modern and efficient infrastructure, and an absence of income or capital gains tax.
The ability to finance the lifestyle, specifically the ability to rent or own real estate—the price in Monaco is similar to that in other capital cities—is necessary for becoming a resident.
Monaco inhabitants, except French citizens are not subject to income, capital gains, or wealth taxes.
Visa-free travel to the Schengen of Europe is possible with a Monaco resident card. Unless someone is an EU national, a holder of a French residence permit, or a resident of Iceland or Norway, they must obtain a long-stay visa to reside in Monaco.
The application process can be completed three months after a visa application is filed to the relevant French consulate. A person must apply for a carte de résident at the Service des Étrangers (Foreigners’ Section) of the local Monaco police station after receiving a visa. A visa holder must fill out an application form and bring it along with relevant supporting documentation to an interview at the Service des Étrangers to get a carte de résident. Eight to ten weeks are required to complete it.
The relevant paperwork includes evidence of housing (a lease or purchase agreement) and enough money to live in Monaco (either a letter from a bank in Monaco, proof of employment in Monaco, or proof of a business being set up in the Principality).
No minimum investment is required. Becoming a citizen is challenging because to be eligible, one must hold a residency permit valid in Monegasque for at least 10 years as an adult over 21. Moreover, candidates are not allowed to complete their national service abroad. Any other foreign nationality they may have must be resigned in writing and submitted to the Prince.
